Do not be Afraid

1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.

Matthew 28:1-5

I am reminded of the constant assurance God gave at times when He’s about to do something great. “Do not be afraid.”

When God revealed to Abraham that he is about to have a child, he did so with a precursor, “Do not be afraid.” (Gen 15:1). When God assured Joshua that He’s got his back, He made the same statement, “Do not be afraid.” (Joshua 1:8) When he commissioned Jeremiah to bear witness to Him, again He said, “Do not be afraid.” Even during the time when the disciples were on a boat buffeted by the wind, they saw Jesus walking on water towards them saying, “It is I, do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27)

To be at the very center of God’s purpose is not always easy. On the contrary, Jesus reminded His disciples, “In this world you will have troubles, but take heart, I have overcome the world!” (John 16:33)

What a powerful reminder. The God who overcome the world is not beyond us. He makes a home in us (John 14:23) and if He really did overcome the world, then no quake nor storm could throw that house down.

A timeless yet timely reminder: Do not be afraid. For those who are in Christ need not be. A Christian life is not sailing a ship through the storm. It is rather a ship no storm can sink.
